Johane Masowe, originally named Shoniwa Masedza, was born in the Makoni district of Zimbabwe. From his early years, he showed a deep spiritual inclination that would later transform into a revolutionary religious movement.

Born in 1914 as Shoniwa Masedza in Gandanzara village, eastern Zimbabwe, he grew up deeply connected to Manyika traditions. In 1932, after suffering severe headaches and visions, he experienced a near-death dream where a burning bush spoke to him, transforming him into Johane Masowe, "John of the Wilderness."
